We
offer Private Classes:
For most people,
mat work offers a sufficient workout because your body provides
all the resistance you need. But for those who crave further exhaustion,
there are Pilates machines designed to magnify resistance via springs
and pulleys. Once people begin Pilates and truly get involved, it
becomes a lifestyle. In a typical session with a private instructor,
you are put through various routines which, at first, appear to
have little format or reason. You continue through a progression
of exercises, starting with the Reformer; a moving carriage with
springs, pulleys and ropes with your feet in unusual positions in
and out of straps. Next is the Cadillac, which mobilizes your spine
and isolates movements from all your joints. The floor routine is
a series of continuous exercises for every part of the body. One
principle becomes strongly apparent during the exercises - no movement
can be performed correctly without having a strong center and total
concentration on the movement being performed.
The initial
challenge is learning to focus on more than one thing at a time:
keeping the abdominals firm, relaxing the shoulders, breathing correctly
with the movement, isolating a particular muscle - it all seems
a bit overwhelming at first. As you progress through the sessions,
it all begins to make sense. You find that you are able to perform
movements, which once seemed clumsy and awkward, with fluidity and
ease. As your needs change and the exercises become easier, the
routines change and become more challenging (there are over 500
exercises!).
Pilates is all
about movement. It is not designed to be a cardiovascular exercise
or to bulk up muscles. It is, however, intended to target specific
muscles while relaxing overused muscles. Pilates is about enhancing
your mental and physical beings in unison, intertwined to produce
the ultimate balance and harmony for mind, body and spirit. The
New York Times stated that people who do Pilates look thinner and
still can eat that huge piece of cake without worrying. Pilates
offers a trimmer waist, flatter belly, better posture, less fatigue,
and lower incidence of back pain and injury.
